Consumer Responsibility and Awareness on Energy Use, Aimed at Reduction of CO2 Emission in Cities

Abstract

Aiming any reduction of CO2 emission in cities, involves both passive and active measures to take. Passive measures include providing energy efficiency and personal efforts to reduce energy use. Active measures necessitate renewable energy production models more than using fossil fuel to produce energy. We planned to combine both two approaches, active and passive, in a project in the context of Climate Change Grant Scheme of EU. Each approach constitutes one of the main activities of the project which is being held in Edremit province.

Universal consumer rights, acknowledged by UN, contains the right of living in a healthy environment. Because of this, Consumer Rights Association combined two different approaches in a project in a sustainable manner. In the first stage we applied training to 40 families on energy efficiency for domestic use. The training was given separately to the children and adults. We are to compare their three months (March, April, May 2017 and 2018) energy use, before and after training.

On the other hand, we planned to give training on renewable energy cooperative to related persons and entities. It’s to be held on 16th of May 2018 in Edremit. We made two study visits to renewable energy cooperatives, both in Çorum and Bursa. We detected the mainstream for establishment of a cooperative. And we also detected some difficulties, those must be tackled by volunteers. We searched for the possibilities of credit from banks. After training, we are to prepare posters and brochures to be handed out in Edremit. Our main effort is to congregate all related bodies and volunteers and to encourage them to be a shareholder of a renewable energy cooperative.
