Performance comparison of multi-effect solar assisted absorption refrigeration systems using LiBr-H2O and LiCl-H2O working pairs.

Abstract

The present study is conducted to evaluate and compare the energy and exergy analysis of solar assisted single, series flow double and parallel flow double effect absorption cooling cycles using LiBr-H2O and LiCl-H2O working pairs. The nanofluids of aluminum oxide-water (Al2O3-H2O) are used as heat transfer fluids (HTFs) in the parabolic trough solar collectors and the results compared with that of pure water (H2O). The energy and exergy analysis of the integrated system is performed in order to evaluate the effect of nanofluids on the coefficient of performance (COP), as well as the exegetic efficiency of the systems. The single, series flow double and parallel flow double effect absorption cooling system using LiBr-H2O and LiCl-H2O working pairs with a cooling capacity of 1000 kW designed and simulated using Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software. The effect of nanoparticles concentration was evaluated to observe their effect on the overall performance of the system. The results confirmed that the thermal conductivity of the nanofluids, Al2O3-H2O is observed to be 11.32% higher as compared with H2O and the heat transfer coefficient observed to be 33.43% higher as compared to H2O. The COP of LiBr-H2O is observed to be 6% higher as compared to LiCL-H2O. The results also show that the COP of single and double effect absorption cooling cycles increases with the increase in evaporator temperature. The COP of the double effect absorption cooling cycle is observed to be 55.5% higher as compared to single effect absorption cooling cycle and the exegetic efficiency is observed to be 4% higher as compared to single effect absorption cooling cycle. The parametric studies were performed to optimize the performance of the integrated system.
