Biography

Prof. Dr. Gertrud Buchenrieder is Professor of “Development Economics and Policy” at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, since 2019 a Member of the Board of Directors of the Research Center RISK at the UniBw M since 2024. Before then, she has held several positions as professor at different universities and research institutes. She was Professor for “Economic and Social Policy of Agriculture at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and at the same time Director and Head of Department, Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) during 2006-2010. Thereafter, she was Professor for “Agricultural and Food Economics” at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Professor of “International Political Economy”, University of Central Europe, Skalica, Slovakia, and Professor of “Politics and Development outside the OECD World” at the UniBw M.

Broadly speaking, her research interests are in the inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development of developing and transition countries. Focal research points relate to the water-energy-food-ecosystem (WEFE) nexus, factor markets, e.g., the financial and the labor markets, whereby migration research dominates in the latter. Furthermore, risk and human security issues are central in her research.

She is a She is also project coordinator of the Horizon Europe project INCiTiS FOOD (Integrated and Circular Technologies for Sustainable city region food systems in Africa), and the two PRIMA projects FrontAg Nexus (Impact of Climate-Smart and Water-Saving Frontier Agriculture on the WEFE Nexus in Arid Mediterranean Regions), and AgriPV Nexus (Scalable Agrivoltaic Solutions for Climate-Smart Agroecology in Mediterranean Farming Systems).
