Energy Production from Municipal Solid Waste in Iğdır Province

Abstract

Renewable energy sources are gaining importance day by day in order to meet the increasing global energy demand. Biomass energy is a renewable alternative to fossil fuels due to its environmentally friendly and sustainable nature.

In this study, the energy generated from municipal solid waste in Iğdır Province was determined and compared with other provinces in the Eastern Anatolia Region as well as with national averages across Turkey. Municipal solid waste refers to non-hazardous and non-toxic waste disposed of from households and public spaces such as gardens, parks, and picnic areas under the responsibility of local municipalities.

The amount of electricity obtained per unit of biomass was calculated for Iğdır, and comparisons were made with both the national and global averages. The findings reveal that electricity generation per unit of biomass in Iğdır remains below both the Turkish and global averages. The installed capacity of the waste-to-energy facility in Iğdır is 1.20 MW, with an average annual electricity production of approximately 5 GWh. Electricity produced from unit biomass corresponds to only 22% of the global average and 67.5% of the Turkish average.

Iğdır’s contribution to electricity production from municipal solid waste is relatively low, and the study proposes alternative solutions to increase the efficiency and sustainability of energy production from domestic solid waste.
