PC Integration in Diesel Grids – Fuel Saving Technologies

Abstract

One large trend in PV off grid systems is the introduction of PV into diesel grids without batteries. Integrating PV is possible up to an energy share around 10%. With so called fuel savers (FS) higher shares can be realized. One task of FS is to care for stable grid by curtailing PV power if the diesel runs outside its operating conditions e.g. low load. The presentation will give an overview of fuel saving potentials of different actual and future technologies. We analyze problems of actual technologies and present solutions integrated in our own developed FS. Further we give an outlook of fuel saving with PV-Diesel-Battery systems.

Biographical Sketch

Alexander Schies studied electrical engineering and information technology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT in Germany and graduated with Diploma (Dipl.-Ing) in 2008. Since 12/2008 he is working at Fraunhofer Institut for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, Germany, as member of research staff and project manager in the department PV Off-Grid Solutions and Battery System Technology. Scientifically he works in the study of the interplay of different components in PV off-grid systems, like PV-diesel systems, operational management systems, optimization through energy and load management, and power stability of micro- and mini-grids. He holds lectures at trade shows (Intersolar), specialist forums (Otti: PV diesel hybrid systems), international conferences and supports conference organization (Sub – Area Chair : Advanced and Off-Grid Applications , at the 40th IEEE PVSEC , 2014 Denver , Colorado , USA).
